Art shift

2 min read
Everyone's art style evolves over time, and sometimes we try something new that just works out and we run with it. I think that's where I'm going with the style I've been using most recently, with sketch and line done on the same layer and copious use of the eraser to make heavy, sketchy-looking lines. I'm still experimenting with it, really... some pieces are more polished than others and I still haven't gotten down exactly how I want to treat color. I'm enjoying the  monochrome pieces at the moment (Tumblr probably knows better than DA that I usually do, since I post more frequently there), but since I'm using these pieces as warmups and cooldowns, I'll probably end up settling the color thing soon.

I think that the thing I enjoy  about it is the fluidity of the lines and the lack of perfection there ... I find lineless rendering fairly tedious but was never really comfortable with smooth, slender, precise line work. I can do it, but it's not the thing I enjoy ... pencil sketching is still among my true loves, and with doing the lines the way I've started to, I feel like I can preserve the energy and gesture of my sketches the way I never could when inking.

Now that the contest I was hosting and the holidays are over, I can focus on a few art things that have been partially waiting for that. Not that most of them have deadlines.

*Christmas Ornaments ... Finished gifts, apparently not getting to ours
*Weapon Design Contest Entry/Entries ... Finished! Won "Most Complete Concept"
*Jade Eyes Cha-lleng Contest Entry ... Finished! Didn't win, but didn't expect to. Was a bit disappointed with how it turned out.
*Den Painting For My Brother ... He commissioned me to paint him and his dog. I have his face and the dog done, but it's going to be some time. Fortunately, he's not in any hurry.
*Royal Tenenbaums Painting For My Sister ... I haven't even started this yet. Too much stuff with a deadline in my queue
*Camp Camelid Coloring and Activity Book ... My mom's alpaca farm needs something amusing and unique. This is still in planning.
*Bear and Bird Square Show Gallery Entry ... Finished! The show ended last weekend and I picked up the piece today. Since it didn't sell, it's available for $45, free shipping in the US.
*Art prizes for my contest on the Spiral Knights forums ... Mawashimono's, Arkalpha's, Snubears, and Vifig's are finished. One of Incoherrant's is up next. Waiting on what Inco wants for her other one and a reference for Trydeth's. Need to track down Lemonadium to see what he even wants.
*Other various gifts and projects ... lots of little things in various states of planning or done-ness

This is more in the order that I thought about them than in the order I'm finishing them. Some of them are here mostly so I won't forget to work on them.

Hi all Spiral Knights enthusiasts! For those who don't often frequent the Spiral Knights forums but enjoy drawing fan art and creating fan fiction, I'd like to direct your attention to the contest I'm running for fan artists, animators, authors, poets, and crafters here: forums.spiralknights.com/en/no…

The contest is in full swing, but there are still 6 weeks left to get your entries in. Each entrant wins at least a participation prize, but there are lots of chances to win bigger prizes, including crowns, CE, accessories (including wings!), equipment, trinket or weapon slots, and more.

For those who are just here to enjoy the artwork, feel free to drop by and take part in the weekly games and mini contests ... you could win CE for writing a funny caption, making up a joke or riddle, finishing a crossword puzzle, or finding the most words in a word search.

We've had lots of extra prize donations lately (including from Spiral HQ!), so the options are always expending, and Spiral Knights has even featured the contest on their social media accounts. Don't miss out!

On fan art.

I know I've been doing a lot of fan art recently; in fact, it's been almost all I've been doing. For that, I apologize a bit to my old watchers; I know it can be a bit frustrating when you follow an artist for awhile and their gallery suddenly becomes nothing but art of a game, show, or movie you're not even interested in.

To my new watchers; I'm taking something of a break from Spiral Knights art for a bit, so new pieces in that vein are likely to be a bit more sporadic. I hope you enjoy some of the other things I have to offer as well.

Really, I need to get back to work studying base technique, drawing from life, and pushing myself to increase my knowledge of anatomy, perspective, light, and color theory. While fan art can be a fun escape, it isn't always good for improving with, especially when so much of it is commissions with a limited scope.
